It is generally the objective of the Houston Rockets to get out on the break whenever they possibly can. They were slowed down quite a bit in the second and third games of their Western Conference playoff series against the San Antonio Spurs, totaling only 22 fast-break points. But they got that tempo going in a big way in Game 4, and blew out San Antonio for the second time in the series.
All four of these games have been decided by double-digit margins, and now we are down to a best-of-three. Game 5 will get underway at 8 PM ET on Tuesday night at the AT&T Center, and the action will be fast and furious for customers of BetAnySports, who can place wagers after the opening tip, accessing the state-of-the-art software available through Live Betting Ultra. During the regular season, Houston shot 46% of its field-goal attempts from three-point range, and they have been consistent with that throughout the series, at 47%. It should be noted that they also have hit with more accuracy from beyond the arc in this particular best-of-seven (38.3%) than they did in their meetings with the Spurs in the regular season, when they were a less-than-mediocre 29.2%.
Sunday’s victory came with a price, however – Nene Hilario, a key big man who comes off Houston’s bench, suffered a muscle tear in his left thigh and he is gone for the duration. Houston already had a thin frontcourt, and San Antonio had begun putting a bigger lineup on the floor, with Pau Gasol starting at the center position. Now Houston might have to counter that by continuing to go small, and even smaller. This brings an edge in quickness, but they will sacrifice a little on defense. Make that possibly a LOT on defense.
BetAnySports patrons know that is was very good news for the Rockets that James Harden, who had been dealing with two-time Defensive Player of the Year Kawhi Leonard, hit just nine of his 30 shots in the first two games, but has come back to go 24-46 in Game 3 and Game 4. He also distributes, quite obviously, and the Rockets through up 43 triples, making 19 of them. Eric Gordon provided firepower off the bench, making six triples and scoring 22 points overall. Houston had 68 points in the second half, and scored exactly 34 points in three of the four quarters.
For San Antonio, it’s obviously going to be a question of getting Leonard started again on the offensive end. Yes, he has had to pull double-duty, as the principal scorer and the principal defender, with Harden, a fellow MVP candidate, being one of his assignments. But he only took four shots in the second half of Sunday’s game, with just two points, and even though he is overtaxed, San Antonio has to get more out of him than that. It was nice that Jonathon Simmons was the high scorer with 17 points off the bench, but that’s not necessarily the kind of thing you want to see in the box scorer, when you have people like Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge to call upon.
